The global cement production industry accounts for about 8% of carbon emissions annually. It’s usually made by heating limestone, a carbonate rock, using fossil fuel-fired kilns. That’s a double whammy of CO2 emissions. Now, in the race to decarbonize the $410 billion global cement industry, scientists are creating new ways to produce it, and startups like Brimstone, Fortera and Massachusetts-based Sublime Systems are putting those new methods to work with a process that doesn’t emit CO2. It avoids all CO2 emissions, both from the fossil fuel and from the limestone. (CNBC)

Kering - the owner of Gucci, YSL and Bottega Venetta - is a good indicator of luxury consumer spending and it announced that revenue had fallen 11% in the first half of 2024, mostly driven by the spending slowdown in China. Japan however was up 22%, another indicator of its booming economy. Is the 'aspirational luxury' consumer running out of money or are they realizing the merchandise they are paying a huge premium for is mass produced and not delivering guaranteed Insta-fame? (CNBC)

Real Estate has multiple tax advantages: One of them is when you inherit property, the IRS applies a stepped-up basis to that asset. This means, for tax purposes, the base price of the asset resets to its value on the day you inherited it. If you were to hypothetically inherit property and then immediately sell it, you would potentially owe no taxes on those assets. The rules are the same whether you jointly own the property or not. Capital gains tax on the jointly owned inherited property will be evenly split, based on the ownership stake, for each owner who inherited a piece of the property.

Unlike most slowdowns, this one is playing out as a textbook soft landing—the rare and difficult feat of slowing the economy without causing a recession. Inflation has cooled without a huge increase in unemployment, retail spending has cooled but not collapsed, and the economy continues to grow. An economist survey sees a 30% chance of a downturn in the next 12 months, compared with 60% in the survey a year ago. (Bloomberg)

This Netflix journey of Simone Biles through her career as being the GOAT in Gymnastics and conquering the “twisties” otherwise known as the yips. This is a GREAT story and provides awareness of what these athletes give up.
